No two weeks are ever the same here, thanks to a year-round programme of world-class festivals, events and performances that add spice and spectacle to the shortest of breaks.
Annual events range from Durham Regatta - this year helping Durham University celebrate its 175th year - to the colourful Miners' Gala, when our resplendent colliery bands lead a vibrant procession of banners through Durham City's streets. The Durham Brass Festival, held every summer, resonates to every variety of brass from traditional bands to contemporary jazz. Then there are folk events, agricultural shows, steam rallies and our traditional Summer and Winter Festivals, celebrating our rich heritage and culture with seasonal entertainment, local food, arts and crafts.
Many of our attractions, including Beamish, Raby Castle, Locomotion, Killhope Mining Museum, Crook Hall and The Bowes Museum to name but a few, host exciting events, talks and workshops for all ages throughout their opening seasons or year-round.
Other events celebrate our creativity, natural assets and sporting facilities. Northern Rocks, The North Pennines Festival of Geology and the Landscape, takes place in early summer in the North Pennines European and Global Geopark, and the England Versus West Indies Test Match will find a passionate crowd at Durham County Cricket Ground throughout the summer. Will England collect more silverware - and will you be there to see it?
