Coast and Countryside

TeesdaleHow big do you like your personal space? County Durham's coastline and countryside is empty of crowds and full of contrasts, from the wild moorland of Upper Teesdale to the wooded haven of Castle Eden Dene National Nature Reserve and the dramatic cliffs, headlands and beaches of Durham Heritage Coast.

Head for the peace and quiet of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and you may be lucky enough to spot a merlin, peregrine falcon or rare black grouse. Our country parks, including Allensford, Pow Hill and Hardwick Park, provide pleasant green picnic spots and waterside walks and in Upper Teesdale High Force, England's largest waterfall, plunges over 70 feet into the sparkling pool below.

CoastlinePack a flask of your favourite brew and unwind on a gentle wander. The Derwent Valley Railway Path takes you along 10.5 miles of former railway past woodland, meadows and the river, while the 11-mile Durham Coastal Path boasts not only stunning clifftop views but also rare flora and fauna.
