MAGICAL TRAIN RIDE TO SANTA'S GROTTO

20th November 2008

The Weardale Railway is again running its Santa Special heritage rail service through the picturesque Durham Dales countryside this Christmas.

Families board the train at the charming Durham market town of Wolsingham and travel through the Dales to Stanhope, where Santa has set up his grotto in the town’s heritage train station.

There is onboard festive entertainment throughout the journey and every child receives a special gift from Santa’s sack upon arrival and is treated to a selection of traditional seasonal refreshments.

Before boarding the train back to Wolsingham, visitors can take time to explore the Lamp Room Gift Shop and Signal Box Café, or wander into Stanhope where they can visit the many arts and crafts shops at the award-winning Durham Dales Centre and Tea Rooms.

Don’t miss the 320-million year old Stanhope ‘Fossil Tree’ – which once grew in a vast tropical swamp on the site of the present day North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The tree never fails to interest children of all ages.
