Laid Back Living

High ForceFor some, being at one with nature is the perfect way to spend a short break, so what could be better than a morning's fishing? Famous for its trout fishing, Derwent Reservoir is a picture postcard coloured lake, so sit back, relax and let your rod do the work!

For something a little more upbeat, head east to visit Durham's Heritage Coast. Walk the coastal path and take in the sea air, which leads you through a wonderful mosaic of natural, historical and geological featured with dramatic views along the way.

Spend a leisurely afternoon in 800 acres of parkland at Auckland Castle. In the park, there are ample places for picnics and there is plenty to see - you may even have the odd deer for company.

Durham City is the perfect location to end your day of outdoor relaxation. Take a tranquil riverside walk around the inspiring Durham Cathedral and Castle peninsula, stopping off to explore the beautiful gardens of Crook Hall. Finish the day with a relaxing meal at one of Durham's many inviting restaurants.

Raring to go

Ride of your lifeNo outdoor break would be complete without a visit to the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty & European Geopark. Take the time to explore by foot and you will find breathtaking scenery and rare birds inlcuding Black Grouse and Red Kites. Or, for something a little different, why not take a tour with North of England Trike Tours.

If you fancy something a little more strenuous, there is an abundance of cycle routes and horesriding trails to enjoy.

In the afternoon, visit High Force - the largest waterfall in England. A woodland walk leads you to the spectacular site and as you begin the descent you will see a tranformation of views every few yards. Relax, unwind and marvel at this magnificant natural attraction.

Wind up your day of 'outdoor and active' pursuits with a hearty meal in one of the homely country pubs in the Teessdale area of Durham.
