Shopping in Durham Durham city’s winding lanes, known as vennels, boast an array of boutiques and craft shops. Head for Saddler Street where Mrs Clemens made her famous Durham Mustard at number 73, whilst Fowlers Yard is a creative hotshot of arts and crafts. The city’s Indoor Market, established in 1851, is livelier than ever with over 80 stalls to peruse. There is also a thriving monthly farmers market where you can find local delicacies such as hill-reared lamb and Dales brewed beer.

Durham Indoor Market Beyond the shops in Durham city, traditional market towns showcase original art, pottery and antiques. Barnard Castle is an Aladdin’s cave, and the Dales Centre in Stanhope combines a visitor centre and craft shops with a popular tearoom.
