Durham City itineraries: Experience Durham Old and New

Day One: History & Heritage

Start the day with a visit to Durham's iconic Cathedral and Castle, together a World Heritage Site. Durham Cathedral is an outstanding example of Norman architecture and shelters both the remains of St Cuthbert's body and those of the Venerable Bede, while the Castle dates back to the 11th century.Durham Castle & Cathedral

Palace Green is a beautiful spot to relax while soaking up the city's historic atmosphere. Here you will also find the Almshouses, a buzzing eaterie ideal for lunchtime diners.

The River Wear has played an important role in Durham's history and one of the most magical views of the Cathedral and Castle can be enjoyed from its banks - the perfect setting for an afternoon stroll. The Prince Bishop river cruiser offers a particularly stylish trip along the river, with a bar, cafe and handy on-board commentary.Durham Castle

Relax with a pot of tea and some home-made snacks at Vennels Cafe, a real hidden gem tucked away behind cobbled Saddler Street.

Durham University (part of which is located in Durham Castle) not only boasts a world class academic reputation, but also hosts a diverse array of events and activities available to all. In addition to a variety of performances and exhibitions, the university holds and extensive programme of public lectures to attend and offers weekly tours of the impressive castle grounds.

One of the city's most photographed buildings is the university's Museum of Archaeology at the Old Fulling Mill. Scenically located below the Cathedral on the banks of the river, the museum houses a fascinating collection, including pieces from Ancient Greece and Rome.
