In Durham City, stroll down the cobbled streets and you will discover many independent and distinctive retailers. Visit Fowler's Yard, an intimate row of craft workshops situated on the banks of the River Wear to find that truly unique present, whilst the Victorian Indoor Market hosts an array of local food producers to put the finishing touches to your festive fare.

Meanwhile, Durham County offers a winter wonderland of coast and countryside, providing a picturesque setting for some festive fun. Charming market towns such as Barnard Castle host an array of attractive shops, whilst the Dales Centre in Stanhope combines a visitor centre and craft shops with a popular tearoom. And if you’re looking for a bargain, head east to Dalton Park in Murton, a purpose built shopping centre with huge reductions on everything from designer clothing to sportswear.

Events

Father Christmas will be waiting by his log fire in the Georgian Study at Crook Hall, where Children can let off some pre-Christmas steam in the garden with Rudolph's Christmas treasure hunt. And for a truly unique experience, Durham Cathedral holds a series of carol concerts during December in aid of charity, featuring choristers from Durham University and local Durham Schools.

The Barnard Castle Christmas Market offers an excellent array of local produce, complemented by a diverse range of craft stalls and seasonal entertainment. Or for something a little different, take a magical trip through the beautiful Weardale scenery aboard one of Weardale Railway's locomotive-hauled Santa Specials. You can even Celebrate a Green Christmas and see Durham's only green Santa  - and make your own environmentaly friendly decorations.
